We all have so far seen the positive sides of marketing campaigns but have you ever thought there was another side? Yes like the sides of a coin

Marketing has two sides as well. But remember these mistakes are to help brands, not fall into the same pit and not to judge someone by their past.

Marketing Mistakes in History

These mistakes are done by many giant companies thinking that they could capture more audience, but here we are looking into their mistakes being the audience. Sit back and enjoy the show while we make a countdown of the disasters created by many leading brands in their early ages.

But remember these huge companies learnt from their mistakes and shine like a diamond now. Most of us are their customers. Past is always far gone but keeping them in mind will help you survive from the worst.

Note: These marketing campaign mistakes are not to make fun of but to learn out of them.

10. Unilever's Fair & Lovely

Unilever Fair & Lovely is an Asian Skin care brand. This brand was leading once upon a time and got overlapped with the arrival of new brands and products. So they decided to change their name in the thought of rebranding but it ended up into an epic fail. There was also another reason mentioned for the rebranding which was to end racism.

But how can a product (cream) end racism? And talking about racism could even contribute to it by simply speaking about it.

9. Snapchat's "Would you rather Ad campaign"

The company Snapchat introduced an Ad campaign in the form of a game "would you rather?" and the user was given "Would you rather slap Rihanna or punch Chris Brown?"

This could drag us back a few years ago Rihanna and Chris Brown were victims of a domestic violence case.

The company was under prolonged nightmare after the Ad campaign where they insulted the most popular celebs in the world.

The Ad was pointed out by a woman on her Instagram page feeling disappointed for the company who gave up on her and domestic violence victims with the only motive of promoting their business.

8. Walker's Selfie Contest

Walker's is a UK based company who is famous for crisps, conducted a Selfie competition in the year 2017 for the public to win a ticket to the UEFA champions league Final.

It was indeed a misfortune for the company that some people posted the images of dictators, serial killers and most wanted criminals.

When the day of the result, Gary stood there holding the images of them without knowing who they were.

This brought a PR nightmare to the company. This also teaches us that never to publish something without having a better look at it.

7. Apple's U2 Album Download

In the year 2014, Apple introduced the U2 Album to all the iTunes users as mandatory even though if the person is not interested. It was there on every iPhone without the owner's permission.

This made many feel that their phone has been invaded by the company. Some even thought that their phones were infected.

But eventually, the company apologized and created a site where the user can delete the file from the device.

6. Dove Facebook Ad

In the year 2017, Unilever's Dove posted an Ad on Facebook showing four images representing before and after using the product but the 1 &2 and the 3 &4 images were different person which became an epic fail.

People also saw this Ad as a racist one, involving degrading the black skin toned people.

The Ad appeared in the Google search as "the racist Ad" giving a bad name to the company's reputation. Later on, the company apologised but it was far gone.

5. Nivea's White is Purity post

In the Middle East, the company Nivea posted an Ad for their "Invisible for Black and White" deodorant.

The Ad was pictured as a dark long haired girl wearing a white outfit with the tagline saying "white is purity". This might be pretty obvious.

To make it more visible fail, white supremacist groups gave a grand applaud for the message, adding on oil to the fire.

4. McDonald's Commercial

In the year 2017, McDonald's uploaded a commercial Ad that was irrelevant to the product. It was one of the worst marketing ideas for the year.

In the Ad, a son goes through his dead father's belongings and end up asking questions to his mom about his dad and they go into the McDonald's and there ends the Ad. It seems like the company wanted to capture the audience with the son's love towards the father but the train left the station and went far away leaving a bad impression on loyal customers.

3. Audi's Chinese Wedding Commercial

According to Audi, never buy anything without clearly checking it before, these lines were literal to Audi and took it so seriously.

The Ad was about a Chinese couple getting married and at the time of word of honour the mother of the groom walks in and pulls the ears, pinches the cheeks, checks the mouth of the bride and walks half way and says "ok".

The moral of the Ad, buy the car be sure to check everything.

Too bad, the company's reputation sailed for a while, for objectifying women.

2. Dominos "calling all the Karen" campaign

Dominos created an Ad campaign saying calling all the Karen to give free pizza, with the picture of Karen wearing a mask. This Ad ran across New Zealand and Australia.

The people in Australia did not find it offensive but the people in New Zealand literally took it as offensive by meaning Karen as over-privileged, white women which ignored the complete minority list of people.

Later Dominos apologised and removed the Ads from showing.

1. Fiat's Love Letter

Marketing mistakes in history

In the year 1994, the company Fiat, Addressed anonyms love letters to Spanish women addresses across the country. There was no sender's address mentioned which created panic, fear and depression among women. They were even afraid to go outside.

The reason for sending these letters t women was to attract them for buying the latest Fiat edition car.

But things went too far, it was like a threat to all the women.

Later a letter was sent saying it was the company with the motive of making the customers buy the new edition car.

There were numerous cases filed and the company apologized and paid the fine for creating a threat to Spanish women.

These are the most interesting yet epic disasters in marketing, of all time. Mistakes happen and it is human nature to rectify or be safe from committing mistakes.
