India marks Gandhi Jayanti tomorrow, October 2, 2026, the 157th birth anniversary of Gandhi. Most agencies will post a quote graphic and move on. We thought it would be more useful to look at what his ideas actually say about running a digital agency, because several of them relate to agency works and ethics.
Commerce Without MoralityThe top two Gandhi quotes that relate to agencies
"Commerce without morality." This comes from his list of Seven Social Sins, which he published in Young India on October 22, 1925.
"Means and the End Cannot Be Separated" He wrote this in Young India in 1924 and it applies directly to unethical practices by agencies.
Commerce Without Morality and the Indian Scam Call Center, Fake Agency Problem
Any agency in India that offers services to the US, UK or Australia has to deal with an uncomfortable fact, which is that the country has a reputation for scam call centers, and the reputation is not invented. In 2016 the US Department of Justice charged 61 individuals and entities in a scheme run through call centers in Ahmedabad, Gujarat that impersonated tax and immigration officials, the very own state of Mahatma Gandhi. The scheme reportedly targeted at least 15,000 people and took more than 300 million dollars. Ahmedabad is also the city where Gandhi was based for years and where the Salt March began, and he was born in Porbandar, also in Gujarat.
The overwhelming majority of Indian IT and digital agency staff work in legitimate businesses, and it is Indian police and agencies like the CBI are fighting hard against scammers. The damage is to trust. A business owner in Texas or Sydney who has been burned once by a fake "Google rep" call is going to be suspicious of the next agency that emails from an Indian domain.
There are so many agencies in India who operate without a license or registered office but claim to be a Google partner or Microsoft certified with 100’s of staff. They scam outsourcing companies by locking into long term contracts, providing false claims and fake reports manipulating the ROAS, Conversions etc.
They even go to an extent that they steal the end clients of outsourcing agency or threaten the outsourcing agencies that they will reveal who they work for behind the scenes to the end client. For those agencies Gandhi’s quote “Means and the End Cannot Be Separated” matters nothing.

For a legitimate Indian white label digital marketing agency, the essentials are a registered company with a real address, GST, IT returns, Affiliations, Awards, Verifiable Membership, team members on site, Years in business, Internet Archive of their presence, Strict NDA’s, proper invoices, and reporting that anyone can verify independently. It helps identify real white label digital marketing agencies.
Truth and honest reporting
Truth was the center of Gandhi’s philosophy, and it applies to the monthly performance report more than anywhere else in an agency. An inflated ROAS figure or a vanity metric dressed up as a result will eventually be found out, usually when the budget gets reviewed. Reporting a weak month along with the reason and the fix builds more trust than a clean dashboard that hides the problem.
Recent Scams
In May 2026 Ahmedabad police shut down a call center that posed as a loan company and collected fake processing fees through gift cards, and on September 25, 2026 the CBI arrested the key accused in a case involving illegal Ahmedabad call centers that defrauded US nationals of more than 7.2 million dollars.
It would be wrong to read this as a Gujarat problem or an Indian problem. The same kind of operation has been shut down in Goa, where 26 people from several states were arrested in May 2026, and in Gurugram and Faridabad in earlier years.
May Gandhi’s teachings inspire everyone to live with honesty, courage, and compassion. Wishing you a peaceful and meaningful Gandhi Jayanti!
