Google AI Search Mode Monitoring is Now Available for Everyone and What It Means for GEO SEO

The previous Google AI Mode only answered a question when a user searched for it; it can now go on to search the web for information the user wants to follow. The AI Mode monitoring feature was previously available only to Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers.

Google has begun to roll out a new AI Mode monitoring feature for all worldwide users. Users can provide directions to Google AI Search on what they want to monitor, and AI Search will continue to monitor for new updates.

Robby Stein, Vice President of Product at Google Search, announced the wider rollout on X, saying users can tell AI Mode exactly what to look for. Google can then keep checking for fresh information and alert users when relevant changes happen.

The interesting part is not only the monitoring feature itself. It is what this says about the direction of Google AI Search.

AI search is starting to get better at discovering, linking, and updating content for the consumer. This is why it will be crucial to consider the clarity of the information a business offers AI systems, as well as its ranking for a keyword on a webpage.

What are the new features of Google AI Search?

This new monitoring feature lets users specify what they want Google AI Mode to monitor. One can, for instance, instruct Google to keep an eye on a product and notify when in stock. The user can also follow a local event, find new restaurants, or monitor changing information about an interest.

Google can keep verifying data from various sources, such as websites, forums, social posts, real-time sources, and Shopping Graph.

When you're looking for information, you're looking around. Normally, you search for something when you need information. If the monitoring is on, Google can then continue to search for updates after its first search. That's why Google AI Search is not just about webpages; it's about ongoing information.

Where GEO SEO comes into this

The update gets interesting from a GEO SEO perspective here. Generative Engine Optimization, or GEO, focuses on the way that businesses, websites, and brands are perceived and represented within AI-powered search engines. Rankings and visibility in the search engine result pages (SERPs) are important for traditional SEO, but GEO takes into account how AI systems process information and apply it to their responses.

Google AI Search is a key player in this dialogue. The quality and consistency of the information provided across the internet can impact the understanding of a business as people use AI to find products, businesses, services, and information. When examining the subject of AI search visibility, having the right business information is becoming more and more vital, as is the presence of useful content and relevant external references.

Google AI Search needs information to work with

You can't control what Google AI Search says about a business. But there are many bits of information that businesses can manage what they put onto the web. This comprises the business name, the products/services provided, locations, opening hours, pricing, availability of products or services, contact details, customer reviews, frequently asked questions, and helpful information about the business.

This information may be displayed throughout a website, Google Business Profile, directories, and other online platforms. Additionally, Citations from a relevant and reputable website can give more context to a company and ensure the same information across the internet.

The intention with GEO SEO is not just to add more keywords to these pages. The information should be unambiguous and consistent, in order to be understood by AI search systems to understand what the business does, where it operates, and what makes it relevant to a specific search.

How can businesses measure their AI visibility?

Simply knowing how a business appears in Google AI Search mode is just half the story. Businesses also require a method to understand how they're being depicted on AI-driven search engines.

That's where an AI visibility audit can come in handy. An AI visibility audit examines the frequency and volume at which a company or brand is seen when users type relevant queries into AI platforms. The audit can look at various types of queries, such as product searches, service-related questions, comparisons, recommendations, or other searches a potential customer may perform, in addition to traditional keywords.

It can also show you what information AI platforms use when they refer to a business and any areas where there is a lack of visibility or supporting information.

In my recent article, Measuring Brand Presence in AI Search Platforms With an AI Visibility Audit, I explored how an AI visibility audit can give insight into brand presence on AI search platforms. It can be helpful when you're considering GEO SEO. An AI visibility audit is another method to ensure that a brand is visible in AI-generated answers instead of taking it for granted that it is present in top search engine result pages.

Google AI Search is becoming more active

The monitoring feature is another step in Google's wider development of AI Mode. It's not just about searching webpages anymore; when a keyword is typed in, search returns a list of everything. Google wants to better understand longer queries, get information from multiple sources together, and give answers that will enable users to accomplish their purpose.

Monitoring does some of this; it lets Google's AI Search mode keep searching for information after the first query and update users. That's what it has to mean for businesses: AI visibility is a metric to be tracked, in addition to traditional search.

But one thing is becoming apparent: visibility in AI search begins with providing search systems with clear, accurate, and useful information. With Google AI Search mode constantly evolving, it could be equally crucial to monitor it as they would monitor a website's position in conventional Google Search.
