Google has added API support for product reviews in Merchant Center, giving merchants a new way to upload and manage product review data automatically. The update can be helpful for enterprises and ecommerce solutions which handle large volumes of product review data, and is offered via the Google Merchant API.
Google Merchant Center Product Review API Update
The Google docs for Google's Merchant Center have added API support for product reviews in Google's Merchant API.
Before: Prior to this: Merchants were able to provide product review data via scheduled file fetches, SFTP, Google Cloud Storage and direct file uploads.
Now: Google’s documentation announces ‘Add product reviews using API’ which allows eligible merchants to programmatically submit and manage product review data through the Merchant API.
This enables companies to keep review information attached to their ecommerce platforms, especially when they have a large or constantly changing number of products or reviews. Google’s Product Ratings program lets shoppers see aggregated review information across Google, including on product reviews. The new API option enables merchants to automate this process rather than manual uploads or file-based processes.
For instance, an e-commerce platform might use the Merchant API to integrate the e-commerce platform's product review functionality into its data pipeline and submit product review data to Google.
The change does not mean that merchants automatically qualify for Product Ratings or that reviews will automatically appear on Google. Companies must remain compliant with Google's rules for the program, and have legitimate product review information available. In general, there are no major updates, except that Google now offers a programmatic API option for product reviews management, in addition to the current file-based approach.
Key Requirements for Merchants
The API does not remove Google's requirements for participating in the Product Ratings program.
Google says merchants should have at least 50 product reviews before applying through the Product Ratings Interest Form. After submission, a Google agent reviews the application and enables the Merchant Center account for the program.
Merchants need to make sure their review data contains the required product identifiers, such as GTIN (Global Trade Item Number) or Brand and MPN (Manufacturer Part Number), so Google can match reviews to the correct products. Google also requires merchants to keep their review data updated regularly. The documentation says the full product review data source must be submitted at least once a month to remain eligible.
Merchants should also be aware that product reviews may not appear immediately after submission. Google says it can take 2–4 weeks for reviews to go live after the initial product review data source is submitted. This means businesses should allow some processing time when setting up or updating their product review data.
For file-based product review data sources, Google says each data source file must be under 4 GB. If a file is larger than 4 GB, merchants need to split it into multiple smaller files before uploading.
Google also notes that reviews not included in a new complete product review data upload can be removed. For businesses managing large review databases, keeping the full review data source accurate and up to date is therefore important
How to Implement the Product Review API
Merchants that want to use the new API first need an active product review feed in Merchant Center and must be enrolled in the Product Ratings program. Google also requires merchants to submit an allowlist request for access to the Product Reviews API.
Once access is available, the basic implementation works like this:
- Set up the API connection
Create or select a Google Cloud project, enable the Merchant API, and configure authentication using OAuth 2.0 credentials or a service account. The Merchant Center account must be available and properly authorized for API access. Merchants also need the required Product Ratings setup and API access - Create a product review data source
Use the dataSources.create method to create a product review data source in Merchant Center. If an appropriate product review data source already exists, use accounts.dataSources.list to retrieve its data-source name. - Send product reviews through the API
Use the accounts.productreviews.insert method to create or update product reviews. The request includes the review information and the data-source name required to associate the review with the correct source. - Keep review data updated
Connect the API with your ecommerce platform or review database so that new and updated reviews can be retrieved and sent to Merchant Center. The integration should handle this synchronization as part of the merchant's own data pipeline. - Check the review status
Google offers a field for the status of the product review resource, letting merchants know if there are any issues with the review or if it is being processed. It can also take a couple of minutes for reviews to propagate after they are created.
GMC API integration can be particularly useful for ecommerce businesses that already have a review system or database and receive reviews regularly. Large ecommerce websites, online marketplaces, ecommerce platforms and businesses managing thousands of products may benefit from connecting their existing review database directly with Merchant Center instead of repeatedly preparing large review files manually.
It can also be useful for agencies managing ecommerce feeds and developers maintaining automated Merchant Center integrations, especially when review information changes frequently
Why This Matters for E-commerce and Digital Marketers
For smaller businesses with only a few products, manually managing review data may not be a major issue. If you're running a larger e-commerce business, marketplace or platform with thousands of items, the information that needs to be reviewed can also be updated regularly. API support enables businesses to automate the product review data submission and management to Merchant Center. This can save some manual effort, and help keep review information up-to-date with an e-commerce site or internal system.
This can also be beneficial for digital marketing and e-commerce teams that send out Google Shopping and ecommerce campaigns. Product reviews help consumers assess the products and accurate and up-to-date product information may improve the shopping experience. But, API support does not in itself guarantee better rankings, more traffic or better sales. The primary advantage is that it makes managing product review data easier and automated, especially for companies with a large number of reviews.
Google Continues Expanding Merchant API
The product review update is also part of Google's broader move toward the Merchant API.
Google's Merchant API updates show continued development around programmatic management of Merchant Center accounts and e-commerce data. Google also mentions that the Content API for Shopping reached its sunset on August 18th, 2026, and that developers developing with these integrations will now need to work with Merchant API. For merchants and technology providers, that means it’s increasingly important to keep their integrations current with Google’s newer API infrastructure.
The Bigger Picture
Google's new API support for product reviews is a relatively minor feature, but it might be helpful for companies that have a large volume of review data. Eligible merchants now have the option to use Merchant API to automate the product review management process, in addition to manual uploads and scheduled files.
With e-commerce getting closer and closer to being tied in with APIs, automation and AI-powered shopping experiences, it will be more critical than ever to be able to keep product, pricing, inventory and review information updated across all platforms.
