What is Google Changing in AI Overviews and AI Mode?
Google’s update covers several changes to how links and sources appear across AI-powered Search:
Inline links will appear higher in AI responses
Google says it has already increased the number of inline links and will now place them higher in responses more often. That means users may encounter a relevant source while reading the answer rather than only after reaching the end.
Timely-article carousels are expanding

Official webpages may get more prominent placement
Google is testing a dedicated area near the top of some responses when one or two official destinations are especially relevant. Searches involving passport renewal, government services, or official product pages are obvious examples where sending users directly to the source can be more useful than adding another layer of AI-generated explanation.
Publisher and creator names are becoming clickable
In AI Mode video results, Google is testing links from publisher and creator names to their Search profiles.
Source: GoogleGoogle has been moving in this direction throughout 2026. Earlier updates introduced richer previews of linked websites and more ways to surface original or firsthand sources.
That being said, being cited is not the same as receiving traffic. More visible links may improve the opportunity to earn a click, but they do not guarantee higher referral traffic.
Preferred Sources is Becoming a Bigger Part of AI Search
Another highlight in Google’s announcement is that the number of people using Preferred Sources has grown more than sevenfold since the beginning of 2026.
Source: GooglePreferred Sources allows people to select publications and websites they want to see more frequently. Google has been extending those preferences into AI Search experiences, giving selected publishers another route to increased visibility.
For publishers, this adds another layer to search visibility beyond conventional rankings. Building a publication readers actively recognize and choose may become increasingly valuable as Google combines personalized source preferences with AI-generated results.
What Websites & Businesses Should Focus on Now
Google’s update may improve the visibility of website links inside AI Overviews and AI Mode, but earning the click still depends on the page behind it.
- Offer more than the AI summary: Original data, firsthand insight, detailed comparisons, specialist commentary, or useful tools give users a stronger reason to visit the source.
- Keep important pages easy to discover: Clear internal linking, crawlable content, and well-structured service or information pages still influence how Google finds and surfaces content.
- Avoid publishing for volume alone: Google’s September 2026 spam update is another reminder that large amounts of thin, repetitive, or lightly reworked content are a poor long-term strategy.
- Check how well the site is prepared for AI search: This 2026 AEO checklist covers the main technical and content areas worth reviewing.
