Google started sun-setting data-vocabulary.org structured data from April 2020. Prioritize switching from structured data to schema.org to eligible for Google rich features.

Beginning from January 20, some sites were commenced receiving a warning in Google search console. Are you one of them who get those warnings? Then this article is for you.  Yes. Google announced that there is no further support for data-vocabulary schema and move to schema.org. This is how Google’s announcement explained the new change:

“As of April 6, 2020, data-vocabulary.org markup will no longer be eligible for Google rich result features.”

After April 6, 2020, data-vocabulary.org will no longer support to enable rich snippets and completely move to schema.org.  Moreover, google search console started showing an alert from January 20  to help in identifying pages that using the data-vocabulary.org.

"As a preparation for the change and starting today, Search Console will issue warnings for pages using the data-vocabulary.org schema so that you can prepare for the sunset in time.”

What is structured data schema?

The search engine uses structured data for the webmaster to crawl, organize, and represent the content. Structured data is a standardized format for providing information about a page and classifying the page content. Structured data markup schema, called schema.org has already collaborated by major search engines. Both schema.org and data-vocabulary.org were used to understand the web page content for user queries.

How structured data schema works?

Structured data is a specific format code like JSON-LD, RDF, written in a specific way that a search engine understands what the page is all about. You can make search engines to analyse your content more easily by putting this specific code on your website. When you do this, the result in the search engines might change the rich snippets.

According to one of the recent luxury hospitality client survey, the below results are found after Google implements the structured data schema. 

  • improved mobile CTR from 2.7 percent to 2.8 percent in Q2
  • Impressions are up by almost 1 percent
  • Increased average position by 12 percent

What is data-vocabulary.org?

Google introduced structured data schema as Vocabulary.org in 2009 and the same was superseded later by 2011. As of April 6, 2020, data-vocabulary.org markup will no longer be eligible for Google rich result features. But still, it will be used for other purposes.

We recommend implementing the following to qualify for Google rich result feature

  • Keep the structured data always up to date

  • Start focus on changing structured data pages to schema.org
