Revamped Caffeine: Google Hummingbird, The New Search Algorithm

Google HummingBirdOn Google’s 15th birthday, Google has revamped its search algorithm so called as “humming bird” as it is “Fast and Precise”. As the evolution of the internet usage has been changing, Google has designed and developed its algorithm to better answer the long tail and complex queries of users all around the world. The actual roll out the algorithm was in the past month and now it’s complete. As most of the users do not use complex queries on search, it would be hard to easily feel the difference in search.

What are the Algorithm Impacts?

As stated by Amit Singhal, Google’s Senior Vice President, The algorithm is an alteration of the Search algorithm “Caffeine” which was introduced earlier before years. The impact of the algorithm would be the major difference in the traffic flow, which affects 90% of the search queries worldwide. Two out of three queries in U.S and almost all the queries in Europe will be affected by this Algorithm launch, says Google. It is said that, the changes would result in a increase in price of Google ads as it is tied to search requests.

Yet  Hummingbird helps users in other ways. As stated in Searchengineland's FAQ, .

"Conversational Search” is one of the biggest examples Google gave. People, when speaking searches, may find it more useful to have a conversation.

“What’s the closest place to buy the iPhone 5s to my home?” A traditional search engine might focus on finding matches for words — finding a page that says “buy” and “iPhone 5s,” for example.

Google aims to have a natural conversation with users and the search engine, so Hummingbird is designed in such a way that it understands the query concept rather than words.

Where does the Algorithm Focus on?

As stated in Forbes,

This update to the algorithm focuses more on ranking sites for better relevance by tapping further into the company’s Knowledge Graph, its encyclopedia of 570 million concepts and relationships among them, according to Amit Singhal, Google’s senior VP of search.”

Hummingbird impacts all types of queries yet the more effect will be on the on the long tail queries that Google gets.
