The new schema markup to get videos indexed

Video marketing has been the hottest topic around last week. We had in fact published a story on clearing up your video submission list to get the most out of video marketing. Now there is even more good news. I am sure that many of you out there (and a few SEO providers) had no clue how to make video appear on the search results as below

Well, those results in the image above are results shown from youtube which we have no control with. Though there are lots of video SEO strategies available today to make youtube videos appear in search results, wouldn’t that be great to show up videos within YOUR WEBSITE in the search results? There are only a very few sites who know the trick behind getting a video indexed by Google as a VIDEO itself. Well, it is not a trick anymore! This becomes a standard procedure to host a video within a site.

A new schema markup is put together by the major search engines including Google to identify videos within a site and display them in the search results. If you are new to schema, just read more about it and then return to continue with this story.

Alright, now that you know about schema, here is the information about the video schema markup. Just like the schema for reviews, you would define the “itemtype” here as itemtype=http://schema.org/VideoObject  along with adding other information such as description, embed url etc. Google has given a sample video schema markup which is:

<div itemscope itemtype="http://schema.org/VideoObject">
  <h2>Video: <span itemprop="name">Title</span></h2>
  <meta itemprop="duration" content="T1M33S" />
  <meta itemprop="thumbnailURL" content="thumbnail.jpg" />
  <meta itemprop="embedURL"
    content="http://www.example.com/videoplayer.swf?video=123" />
  <object ...>
    <embed type="application/x-shockwave-flash" ...>
  </object>
  <span itemprop="description">Video description</span>
</div>

The most interesting fact is that, implementing this markup for the video will not alter your existing sitemaps or RSS feeds. So, what are you waiting for? “The magic is revealed”. Implement schema markup for your videos and let search engine recognize them as VIDEOS
